Een platenwarmtewisselaar is a type of warmtewisselaar design that uses plates and finned chambers to transfer warmte between fluids, most commonly gases. It is often categorized as a compact heat exchanger to emphasize its relatively high warmteoverdracht surface area to volume ratio. The plate-fin heat exchanger is widely used in many industries, including the ruimtevaart industry for its compact size and lightweight properties, as well as in cryogene where its ability to facilitate heat transfer with small temperature differences is utilized.
Warmtewisselaars met lamellen van aluminiumlegering, vaak gesoldeerde aluminium warmtewisselaars genoemd, worden al meer dan 60 jaar in de vliegtuigindustrie gebruikt en rond de tijd van de tweede wereldoorlog opgenomen in de cryogene luchtscheidingsindustrie en kort daarna in cryogene processen in chemische fabrieken zoals Natural Gas Processing. Ze worden ook gebruikt in spoorwegmotoren en auto's. Vinnen van roestvrij staal worden al 30 jaar in vliegtuigen gebruikt en worden nu ingeburgerd in chemische fabrieken.
